Sunday Selections – Fromelles

07 Aug

I am joining in with FrogPondRocks and joining in Sunday Selections.

A few weeks ago the kids had the day off school to join with a large portion of our extended family for a trip in to a memorial service held at the Cobbers Sculpture near the Shrine of Rememberance.  The service was to remember the soldiers who were involved in the Battle of Fromelles during World War 1, ‘one of the worst 24 hours in Australia’s entire history’.  This service was significant because it also honoured the memory of the soldiers who fought and lost their lives and were buried in mass graves who until recently were unknown.  One of those soldiers has recently been identified as my great great uncle Tom Sheridan.

And for something a little different – a self portrait.

Self Portrait!

Check out all the other awesome Sunday Selections, better still, play along too!

Wow, what a beautiful ceremony! I love the statue too. What a wonderful way to remember, and teach your children… just great!

I cant believe it has taken me so long to get over here Del. I am sorry.

My great grandfather was at Gallipoli, he then went on to serve at the Western Front. He was wounded three times and received the Military Medal as well as the Belgian Croix de guerre. His younger brother was killed in France. I want to go to Villers Bretonneux for Anzac Day one year.
    lest we forget
