Weekly Winners #21 (26 Apr – 2 Sun) Visiting the Queen

03 May

A nice warm Saturday with nothing to do so we headed out for a walk along the river.  Since we played at Edgewater Lake last weekend, we wandered in the opposite direction and went to visit the Queen instead.  My post for this weeks Weekly Winners is of places that are less than 10 minutes walk away, even when you are walking at kid speed.  This was our destination – The Heavenly Queen, a temple that is being built just up the river from us.

The Heavenly Queen

To get to the queen, we wandered under the train bridge and checked out the graffiti.

Then we had to check out the dumped and burnt out car.

The Old and the New

Boy-child was fascinated by the engine that was rusted out and destroyed.

I Don't Think It Works Any More

Then it was off to check out the temple.  It is still a work in progress but the intricate detail is amazing.  It was disappointing to see that inside the temple, behind the construction fencing there was tagging on the walls.  Luckily it was on the brickwork and not on any of the intricate details of the stone.

Carved Pillars

Once the temple exploration was completed, it was time for the kids to practice their rock throwing skills as I tried to work out what would happen when I changed different settings on my camera.

Ready to Splash

The kids struggled climbing up and down the bank to the water but seemed to enjoy the challenge.

Climbing Up

One more stop at the dumped car and it was time to head home.

Rust Bucket by the Rail Bridge

So many amazing things to see and explore so close to home.  I guess they aren’t the typical places one goes to enjoy the outdoors but they are fun and they work for us.  I love that the diversity in the community we share.

It is completely out of character for me of late, but I am early with my Weekly Winner post this week.  For other Weekly Winners, check out the list at I am Lotus when it is posted.

The Queen is beautiful. I can’t wait until the temple is finished, I feel a calmness when I am in the area, even if it is surrounded by burnt out cars and unusual graffiti.
